IREANIC ART PORTFOLIO
games
Here is all my art related to game projects - works in progress and fully finished games, but also scrapped projects and other ideas that weren't continued.
Isometric WIP
2023/24
Very recently started project, as I have been wanting to make an isometric game for a long time now and finally got the chance!

Since I learned the basics of making a standard sideview tilemap in my "orb" game, I thought that trying out an isometric tilemap could be a fun next challenge. I've always been very fond of the isometric perspective for games, but have found that making an isometric game as a solo project would require a lot more coding work than I want to do. But with the help of some friends I can fully focus on the creative parts of this project!
Find the orbs
2023
An experimental platformer game which will mainly contain puzzles and problem-solving. You need to find different colored orbs which have been spread out over the map and return them to their place.

For this game, I decided it was time to learn how to utilize tilemaps. After scrapping my old school project due to a big map with very inefficiently drawn assets, I wanted the art to actually be suited for making a game - and tilemaps are the way to go. It took me a lot of back and forth and testing to learn how to make the tiles work seamlessly while still being able to keep my usual artstyle. In the end, I'm very happy with the results! After my fruit game, I realized how much a smaller color palette helps with making the graphics in the game feel cohesive and tied together - so for this game I am using a limited color palette as well.
Breaking Bread
2023
A top-down bullethell made with some friends during LiU Fall game jam 2023.

— Finished, play here!
My first ever game jam! With the three different themes to be inspired by during the jam being "Ageing trampoline", "Bread crops" and "Turtle switch" we ended up focusing on the second theme. There was originally a plan to incorprate crops as well, but it got lost somewhere during development and we went all-in on the bread theme - a bit inspired by Enter the Gungeon. I worked together with another artist during this project, and since I had decent experience in making tilemaps that was my main focus, while she did most of the character and weapon art. I was originally going to be the only artist, but looking back there is no way the game would've been nearly as finished in regards to the graphics - I missed out on multiple things I wanted to draw despite only having half of my intended workload. It's not exactly the most stunning game, but it was still a lot of fun to work on and I'm happy with how many of our ideas managed to get included in the game during the 48 hour time limit.
Fruit catcher
2022
A simple sideview infinity game with a single locked screen. You run around as a girl with a basket and try to catch oranges that fall from the sky as well as avoiding rock monsters which can appear from either side of the screen. The goal is to collect as many points as possible!

I started making the fruit catcher game during the summer after I graduated. Finding myself unmotivated to work on the seasons game, I decided I wanted to make a game that was way smaller and simpler, so that I would be able to finish it. Despite being simple, I'm very proud of this game. I used a limited color pallette to make the colors look nice together, and with the randomization of where the fruits spawn + when and where the enemies spawn, I find that it has a nice replayability which is something I really appreciate in games. I focued on adding small details such as having the raindrops in the background, dirt particles when you land after jumping, and giving the falling oranges proper animations for when they hit the ground and bounce back. I feel like this really helps the game feel more finished. I also made a simple repeatable tune in an 8-bit style, as that type of music feels very associated with games.
Seasons game
2021/22
A sideview platformer where you can freely switch between 4 alterations of the main character, representing the 4 different seasons. Switching character also changes the environment, such as freezing water during the winter. This is the main way of overcoming obstacles in the game.

The "Seasons game" was my project during my third year of school. I wanted to make a unique game where the enviroment was the main focus, and was something you could interact with and affect more directly as a player. However, my way of building the game was way too time-consuming and inefficient. All the sprites had 4 different animations for each season with slight color variations which I drew uniquely for every asset rather than finding some way to tweak the colors using overlays. This also made the game very laggy. I think this game was a good example of a good idea and bad execution, and I might look to remake it in the future. This project helped me realize how to draw assets that were more optimized for the type of game I was making.
